Minnesota United needed until second-half stoppage time to inject some positivity before MLS heads into a two-month break for the FIFA World Cup.

The Loons failed to produce a shot on goal until substitute attacker Mauricio Gonzalez’s header goal in the 93rd minute salvaged a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon at Allianz Field.

MNUFC (6-5-4, 22 points) avoided losing three straight games for the first time since July 2024, but continue to allow early goals and struggle to win at home.

United will have to sit on that underwhelming form until their next game July 22 at Sporting Kansas City.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, head coach Cameron Knowles changed shape and made a handful of attacking substitutions, including Dominik Fitz making his first appearance of 2026 and Marcus Caldeira in his MLS debut.

Gonzalez’s first MLS goal came on a header with an assist from Joaquin Pereyra halfway through six minutes of stoppage time. Minnesota didn’t put a shot on frame until that moment.

With Kelvin Yeboah held out for an “internal matter” with the club, Momo Dieng started in place and had two goals scratched after review determined he was offside.

The first came on a long ball over the top in the 19th minute and the second came on a free kick into the box on the fourth minute of stoppage time.

The Loons trailed 1-0 after Zach Booth roofed a shot in the 22nd minute; the RSL wingback got extra space as Loons defender Anthony Markanich pinched too tight before a ball went wide to Booth.

RSL (8-4-2, 26 points) failed to win three in a row.
