The New York Mets were shut down for the second straight game by the Miami Marlins, as they got just three hits for the afternoon and they lost for the fourth time in their last five games to drop below Miami and regain their hold on last place in the NL East.

The pitching matchup looked promising with Freddy Peralta on the mound for the Mets, but Peralta got completely outdueled by Miami starter Max Meyer.

The Marlins put the Mets down early with two runs in the second on a walk to Jakob Marsee, a single by Connor Corby and a two run double by Owen Cassie. Liam Hicks followed up the next inning with a solo homer to make it 3-0.

Max Meyer was coming off six shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves in his last start, and he brought his a”A” game in this one. He dominated the Mets in this lineup as he pitched seven innings of shutout ball and gave up just a single hit, and Meyer added seven strikeouts along the way.

Hicks struck again in the fifth off Peralta with another solo homer make it 4-0, and that was more than enough against the anemic Mets offense. The Mets struck out a total of 11 times, with a 64-mph single off the bat of Mark Vientos as their only hit through the first eight innings.

Peralta wasn’t great, but he did manage to make it through seven innings. He wound up giving up all four runs on eight hits and two walks, although he did strike out nine. Jonathan Pintaro finished up with a clean inning in the eighth as the sole reliever.

Anthony Bender and Andrew Nardi finished up for the Marlins, with Nardi giving up a token run in the ninth on a double by pinch-hitter Tyrone Taylor and a lined single by Vientos to get the Mets on the board and account for the final score.

The offensive stats for the Mets are depressing, and they tell a familiar story. The Mets have now scored just one run or less in 14 of their first 52 games, and they’ve scored just two runs on seven hits during the first two games of this series. Christian Scott will go for the Mets against an unnamed Marlins starter, and we wish him all the luck in the world given the state of the Mets offense.
