The opening night of the NHL season is in the books, and no game brought more thrills than the Vancouver Canucks’ 6-5 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.
While the Oilers failed to beat a team many expect to finish at the bottom of the NHL standings, there were still plenty of positives from Mike Babcock’s first game behind the bench.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton dove into the performance, in particular the five-point, hat-trick headline night from Evan Bouchard, which forced one of the co-hosts to surrender his hat in celebration.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Evan Bouchard became the first defenseman in NHL history to record five points in their season opener. He logged over 25 minutes of ice time with a hat trick, and he picked up two assists as well. That was an all-time game for Bouchard.
Carter Hutton: that was something else. I know you donated your hat there to his hat trick, so we’re going to start a GoFundMe to try to get that bad boy replaced here, and for Bouchard, you know, what else does he need to do? I know he’s going to take heat, right?
The fact is, for him, he just needs to keep rolling here, and I think they just need to find a way to protect the zone. And this is why you brought Mike Babcock in. The mistakes that are glaring in the video, the changes they’re going make, are going to be there. I didn’t think we were gonna walk right into this season and just have a totally new Evan Bouchard because of Babcock. I think it’s gonna take time, and it’s gonna put some pressure on their better players, but if he keeps producing like this, It’s going to be really hard to stop the Oilers, especially if they can get a save from their goalies.
