Red Sox could create elite heart of the order with blockbuster Yordan Alvarez trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have been on a roll recently, with their last series being a sweep of the Kansas City Royals on their home field. The offense’s consistency has picked up, but it’s still missing that true slugger for the lineup to break them out of their inconsistency.
They have some stud hitters in Wilyer Abreu, Willson Contreras and Ceddanne Rafaela, but Boston still lacks a superstar slugger. With that in mind, it would be a perfect time to reconsider a trade for Houston Astros three-time All-Star and ALCS MVP Yordan Alvarez.

Alvarez has been on a tear for Houston. He’s slashing .303/.412/.605/1.017 with 11 doubles, 15 home runs, and 31 RBI in 51 games this season.
His SLG and OPS would be a perfect facelift for the Red Sox’ offense, which has struggled immensely with those two particular statistics this season. Even as a lefty, his swing would play perfectly in Fenway Park.

The Red Sox have been pegged as a potential new home for Alvarez in the past, and for good reason. The big lefty slashes an AVG of .488 in Boston, and has seven home runs along with 16 RBI in just 12 games there.
Combine that with the bats of Abreu, Contreras, and Rafaela, and the Sox have a monster heart of the order that could completely overhaul their oftentimes piddling offense.

Houston is at the bottom of the AL currently, and if they can’t get out of their funk, they will be sellers at the deadline. Next year, they’ll need pitching and outfield depth, things the Red Sox have in spades.
The Red Sox could offer up Masataka Yoshida or Jarren Duran as outfield help, and top pitching prospects like Jake Bennett, Anthony Eyanson, or Kyson Witherspoon.
If the Sox are still in the hunt by August, this is a trade they need to make. Alvarez could become their franchise DH for the next decade, and be a core part of their offense as well.
