Some positive news in Hockeytown…sort of.

According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, defenseman Simon Edvinsson is planning to attend the Detroit Red Wings‘ training camp later this month, despite having yet to sign a new contract.

Hearing that RFA Simon Edvinsson intends to still be at Detroit’s training camp next week even if still unsigned. Patiently waiting for the Red Wings GM situation to iron itself out before resuming negotiations.

Per LeBrun, Edvinsson is putting negotiations on hold until the Red Wings’ general manager situation is finalized.

The Red Wings have been without an established GM since Steve Yzerman resigned in mid-July, moving to a role as senior advisor to team owner Christopher Ilitch. Assistant GM Shawn Horcoff was named interim GM to manage the day-to-day operations, but has been held back from making any notable moves, including trading NHL assets. That has become a point of contingency regarding captain Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade from his hometown team shortly after the 2025-26 season came to a close.

Edvinsson is unquestionably one of the most important pieces on the Red Wings roster, both in the present and future tense. The big Swedish blueliner was taken by the Original Six franchise sixth overall in the 2021 NHL Draft and progressed quickly to becoming a full-time NHLer by the 2024-25 season.

Edvisson is part of a young contingent on Detroit’s growing blue line. Alongside names such as Moritz Seider, Albert Johnasson and Axel Sandin-Pellikka, the Wings have a solid young core of defenders that can carry the team into the future. In his rookie season, Edvinsson posted a career-high 31 points in 78 games. His production dipped last year, notching nine goals and 25 points in 72 affairs, though he finished with a plus/minus of +12 while averaging 22:21 of ice time.

Last season marked the final year of Edvinsson’s three-year, entry-level contract, which carried an AAV of $1,744,167. In 175 NHL contests, the 23-year-old has scored 19 goals and 41 assists for 60 points.
