The 2026 Iowa high school track and field meet wound up being a historic one from May 21-23 at Drake Stadium.
Whether it was the Waukee Northwest girls breaking the all-time team points record to win its second-consecutive team title and fourth in five years, Western Dubuque superstar Quentin Nauman doing what he does best in distance events or other records being broken, it was a head-turning weekend on the Blue Oval.
To analyze it all, here is a class-by-class breakdown and analysis from the Iowa high school state meet.

The Wolves were heavy favorites coming into the Iowa state track and field meet, but they put together a team effort that is going to be hard to top anytime soon. They secured the all-time points record of 150.5 points, shattering the previous record of 126 points set by Davenport Assumption a decade ago.
In total, Waukee Northwest secured seven state titles: the 100 and 200-meter dashes, 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and shuttle hurdle relays. Across the 19 events, Northwest recorded at least a team point in each. Senior Katie Willits led the way with the 100 and 200-meter state titles, as well as running a leg in the shuttle hurdle relay, which broke an all-time Iowa record, and taking second in the 100-meter hurdles.
This is the program's fourth title in five years and second in a row.
"I really can't comprehend it right now," said Waukee Northwest head coach Ben Duea. "We have an unbelievable group of athletes. It's just a culture that's unmatched right now, not just in track and field, but Northwest athletics and girls especially."

The depth of the Tigers shined in a competitive Class 4A field, with their 4x800 relay being the lone state champions for the squad.
Brennen Hoyer ran the anchor leg of the 4x800 relay, which ran a time of 7:39.37. He also took third in the 800-meter run. Marcus Tomlyanovich also starred, as he ended fourth or better in all of his events, including a second-placed finish in the 4x400 relay. Senior Austin Hansen also took second in the high jump.
The Mustangs edged out ADM for their first title since 2010 when they were combined with Lisbon, and claimed the first win since 1985 as a solo institution.
Leading this weekend was senior CaliAna Whitaker and junior Evelyn Moeller. Whitaker won the 200 and 400-meter state titles, while Moeller took home three state titles in the 800, 1500 and 300-meter runs. Their 1600 medley and 4x800 relays also finished in third to round out a title-winning weekend.
The Dutch ran away with the Class 3A boys team title, outscoring second-placed Clear Lake by 41 points.
Leading the way was Canaan Dunham, who won the 800-meter state title and anchored the 4x800 relay state championship squad. Harrison Mullins also shined, anchoring the 800 medley state championship team and finishing fourth or better in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. The cherry on top was a state championship from their shuttle hurdle relay crew, with a time of 57.17 seconds.

Pella Christian's sprinters came through, as always, in the state title effort, securing the program's second straight team title.
Not one, not two, not three, but four relay titles went to the Eagles in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 800 medley. Add those to two individual titles from Rachel Kacmarynski in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, as well as Bailey Vos' win in the 400-meter finals, the Eagles sprinters had a weekend for the ages.

For the first time in program history, the Pirates are taking home a team state title in track and field.
Alburnett broke a tie with Grundy Center in the final event in style, winning the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:19.66. A state title in the 800-meter run from Caiden Bueckers, who ran a leg for the 4x800 relay state championship-winning team, helped narrowly take down the rest of the field for a program-defining moment.
Edgewood-Colesburg was another program to win its first state title, as Lilee Boriskey and Eva Vaske starred over the weekend.
Individually, Boriskey took second in the high jump, but also was a part of the program's 4x200 relay state title victory and second-placed 4x100 team. Vaske was second in the 400 hurdles and third in the 400-meter dash, while anchoring a silver medal team in the 800-meter medley. Kendall Wittman also took third in shot put, rounding out the program's first team state title.
We'll round out the recap with another first-time team state champion.
