After pulling off their first two wins in the Big Ten Tournament, the Washington Huskies' run in Omaha, Nebraska, came to an end on Saturday at the hands of their arch-rivals in a 9-4 loss to the Oregon Ducks.
Even with All-Big Ten Third Team honoree Noah Kenney on the mound, coach Eddie Smith's pitching staff struggled. The junior took the loss after allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks with 5 strikeouts over 4 innings of work, as the Huskies struggled to keep the Ducks inside Charles Schwab Field.
The Ducks hit five home runs—all solo shots—as designated hitter Naulivou Lauaki, third baseman Drew Smith, first baseman Brayden Jaksa, center fielder Jack Brooks, and left fielder Gabe Miranda all went deep in the contest. Meanwhile, Washington's lineup couldn't keep pace.
The only bright spot was senior second baseman Ty Cowan, who blasted a grand slam in the ninth inning, the first home run of his UW career. Washington was able to muster 8 hits in the contest, with third baseman Blake Wilson being the only member of the lineup to tally multiple, going 2-for-4 with a run scored on the day.
Cal Scolari earned the win for the Ducks after working 5 innings and letting up 4 hits and 2 walks with 10 strikeouts, as Oregon racked up 14 strikeouts in the game.
With the loss, the Huskies ended their season under Smith and in the Big Ten with a 25-32 record.
