One of the richest people in the United States of America is adding another professional sports team to his portfolio.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Colorado Avalanche owner Stan Kroenke and his group, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, acquired a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball from Arte Moreno.

Kroenke, who is the largest private landowner in the country, now has ownership stakes in eight different sports franchises. He’s also owner and co-chairman of English Premier League powerhouse Arsenal FC, as well as the club’s women’s team. He’s the CEO and owner of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and the Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Rapids (MLS), Colorado Mammoth (NLL), and, formerly, the Colorado Crush of the defunct Arena Football League.

Kroenke, a native of Columbia, Mo., first became owner of the Avalanche when he purchased the club, as well as the Nuggets, from Ascent Entertainment Group in 2000. One of Kroenke’s franchises saw immediate success when the Avs won their second Stanley Cup in 2001. The Avalanche went on to win another championship under Kroenke’s watch in 2022.

The 79-year-old knows how to bankroll winners. Along with two Stanley Cups on his resume, Kroenke has had ownership stakes in teams that have won two Super Bowls (1999, 2021), two NLL championships (2006, 2022), an NBA championship (2023), an MLS Cup (2010), a EPL title (2025-26), a UEFA Women’s Champions League championship (2024-25) and an Arena Bowl (2005).

Kroenke will be taking over an Angels franchise that has been the doormat for the big leagues for well over a decade. The team hasn’t made the playoffs since 2009, and even with players like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani in their arsenal, Los Angeles has only been mediocre at best.
