A depth piece is staying in the Gateway to the West for another year.
On Friday, the St. Louis Blues signed forward Oskar Sundqvist to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal has an NHL cap hit of $850,000, a minor-league salary of $300,000, and a guaranteed salary of $350,000 for the 2026-27 season.
It’s a little bit of a demotion for Sundqvist, who just finished up a two-year, one-way contract with the Blues. That deal had an AAV of $1.5 million.
Sundqvist, who is in the midst of his second stint in St. Louis, had a tough 2025-26 campaign. On a team that generally struggled for most of the year, the Swedish center battled injury and inconsistent play, leading to him appearing in just 52 games. He ended up scoring just five goals and 12 assists for 17 points, the lowest point total he has registered in a normal season since the 2017-18 campaign, when he was still splitting time between the NHL and AHL. He also had a plus/minus of -18 while averaging 12:56 of ice time per game.
Sunqvist did have a chance to represent his country in the spring, playing eight games for Sweden at the IIHF Men’s World Championship.
The 32-year-old had posted at least 20 points in six of the past seven seasons, as he only reached nine points during the COVID-shortened 2021 campaign. That included a solid 14 goals and 31 points in his rookie season in 2018-19, during which he was a key depth player on a Blues team that won the franchise’s first Stanley Cup.
In 545 regular-season games in the NHL, Sundqvist has posted 67 goals and 114 assists for 181 points, with another 13 points in 44 postseason contests.
