Morning all. Did my usual Friday tape session and wanted to flag a few names before kickoff. These aren't the headliners you'll see on the ticker all day.
Michael Hawkins Jr., QB, West Virginia – Mountaineers are 3-3 and unranked, so nobody's writing features about this kid. But 58/111, 1055 yards, 7 TD and only 1 INT is a real number. One interception. Cincinnati comes to Morgantown at 4-1, so this is a chance to see how he handles a good defense with something on the line.
Hakeem Watters, RB, Charleston Southern – I know, I know. But 55 carries, 369 yards and 6 touchdowns for an unranked FCS program going into Death Valley is worth noting. Clemson isn't even ranked right now at 3-2, and their freshman QB Tait Reynolds has 3 picks against 1 touchdown. Watters won't win this game but watch how he runs early.
Isaiah Marshall, QB, Kansas – Jayhawks are 2-3, which is a rough spot. But 76/141, 1143 yards, 8 TD and 4 INT in a Sunflower Showdown at unranked Kansas State is a legitimate proving ground. That completion percentage is workable. Kid can move it.
Javarius Green, WR, Boston College – 18 catches, 169 yards for a 2-3 Eagles squad. Small numbers, but Pittsburgh at 5-1 is a real test and their QB Mason Heintschel has been sharp. Green getting looks against a winning team tells you something.
None of these programs are getting SportsCenter time today. That's exactly why I watch.
Anybody else got a name on an unranked team they're keeping tabs on this morning?
