General manager Don Sweeney released a statement.

“The Boston Bruins are deeply saddened to share the passing of our colleague Alex Gimenez,” Sweeney said. “Alex joined our team in July as Director of Hockey Operations, Collective Bargaining Agreement. Although Alex’s time with the Bruins was far too brief, his intelligence, thoughtfulness and character were evident from the moment he joined us. Alex earned the respect of all who knew and worked with him throughout his career and, most importantly, he was a wonderful person who will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Alex’s family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Bruins hired Gimenez in July of this year, amid a flurry of other front-office hirings. He was brought in to have a focus on the new collective bargaining agreement. It was a newly created position that was responsible for contract negotiations, salary cap management, player acquisition strategy and CBA compliance.

The man who grew up cheering for the Bruins made the jump to the NHL after spending a few months working with the Professional Women’s Hockey League as manager of hockey analytics and strategic projects, a role he started in January 2026. Prior to that, he worked with the MLB’s Boston Red Sox for over a decade, serving as assistant director of Major League operations and pro scouting.

The Red Sox also released a statement upon learning of Gimenez’s passing.

“Alex was an integral member of our baseball operations for over a decade, and forever a part of our Red Sox family,” the team said. “We are absolutely heartbroken by this news and send our love to Alex’s family.”

A graduate of Cornell University, Gimenez was also an adjunct professor at his alma mater in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
