A strong, growing center has inked his first NHL deal.
On Tuesday, Washington Capitals general manager Chris Patrick announced that the team has signed forward Oliver Suvanto to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will carry an NHL AAV of $1.075 million, with a minor-league salary of $87,500.
Suvanto won’t start next year in the Capitals system. Instead, he has been loaned to Tappara of Liiga, Finland’s top professional league, for the 2026-27 season.
Suvanto’s name was called early last month at the 2026 NHL Draft, as the Capitals selected the 17-year-old with the 18th overall pick in Buffalo. It came after his first full season with Tappara, in which he showed a lot of promise despite not producing much with the big club. In 48 regular-season games, he posted two goals and nine assists for 11 points and played one playoff game on a squad that went on to claim the Liiga championship.
Suvanto appeared in three regular-season games with Tappara’s Under-20 team, scoring three goals before posting five assists in 14 postseason contests. He also played for Finland at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship and Under-18 Men’s World Championship, scoring two goals at the WJC, before posting a goal and three points in five games at the U-18s.
Daily Faceoff prospect analyst Steven Ellis, who had Suvanto 28th in his final draft rankings, acknowledges Suvanto’s ability to be an effective and versatile player down the middle.
“I really like his play away from the puck, and I thought he looked solid at the World Juniors in a variety of roles,” Ellis wrote. “While there are times where he’s easily the best player on the ice, it wasn’t frequently enough, and he doesn’t have the offensive talent to suggest he’s anything more than a bottom-six player at this point.”
