It looks like Spencer Carbery will be staying in Washington a little bit longer.

According to The Fourth Period and Daily Faceoff insider Dave Pagnotta, the Washington Capitals and the head coach are in agreement on a multi-year contract extension.

Carbery had one year remaining on his four-year contract that he signed when the Capitals initially hired him in 2023.

While the actual duration of the extension is not known, it being for multiple years implies that Carbery is signed through at least the 2028-29 season, and possibly beyond that. No other details are known, including the salary on the deal.

The Capitals are coming off their most disappointing season under Carbery, but even then, it was still as good of a season as one can get without making the playoffs. They finished fourth in the Metropolitan Division with a 43-30-9 record, and were only four points out of a playoff spot with 95 points. However, they were tied with the eventual Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights, mostly falling victim to the points imbalance between the two conferences. Additionally, after a 111-point season with a league-high 10.64% 5v5 shooting percentage in 2024-25, a regression was expected last season.

In Carbery’s three seasons as head coach, the Capitals have a 134-83-29 record, with their .604 points percentage being the eighth-best in that span. Washington has made the playoffs twice under Carbery, with one series win over the Montreal Canadiens in 2025. He’s the seventh-longest tenured coach in the NHL.

Prior to Carbery’s time as head coach with the Caps, he was an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2021 to 2023. He had also been with the Capitals organization prior to that as the head coach for their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, from 2018 to 2021.

Carbery was also an assistant coach for Canada at the IIHF 2026 World Championships. Canada went 6-1-0-0 in the group stage before falling in the bronze medal game to Norway.
