The New Jersey Devils have signed goaltender Nico Daws to a two-year contract extension with an annual average value of $1.1 million
Daws has spent his entire pro career with the Devils organization since getting drafted 84th overall in 2020. The 25-year-old goaltender primarily played in the AHL with the Utica Comets last year, going 17-16-11 with two shutouts and a .892 save percentage. He also played in three games with the big club, going 2-1-0. Daws made his NHL debut in 2021-22, going 10-11-1 as part of a crowded Devils crease. He’d return to the NHL two years later, where he went 9-11-0 in 21 outings. Daws also made his Canadian men’s senior team debut, winning his lone start at the World Championship.
Daws has a career record of 24-24-1 with one shutout and a .898 save percentage over 55 NHL games. In the AHL, Daws has a 60-60-21 record with six shutouts over six seasons.

Daws has been New Jersey’s third-string goaltender the past two years after the club acquired both Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen. With Markstrom now out of town, Daws has an opportunity to play a bit more in a tandem role with Allen, assuming the Devils don’t do anything to address their goaltending situation.
The Devils have only two goaltenders signed, with Jakub Malek currently a restricted free agent. The club did not sign Tyler Brennan to a qualifying offer this week, making him an unrestricted free agent. The Devils have just over $8.6 million in cap space with no notable RFAs to sign. Dennis Cholowski, Evgenii Dadonov and Zack MacEwan are the team’s three top UFAs.
The Devils finished 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 42-37-3 record and ultimately missed the playoffs.
