Colten Ellis made 23 saves to record his second career shutout, leading the Buffalo Sabres past the San Jose Sharks 2-0.
Ellis appeared for the first time in more than two weeks after being removed in the middle frame Oct. 12 versus Florida. The goaltender denied Collin Graf on a setup by Macklin Celebrini in the second period and stopped Kiefer Sherwood from close range with 4:01 remaining.
Olen Zellweger found the net in the second period, his third goal of the season, with Konsta Helenius providing the helper. The Sabres beat the Sharks for the eighth time in their last nine meetings and recorded their second consecutive shutout in San Jose following a blanking last March.
Sharks goaltender Yaroslav Askarov turned aside 38 shots, including 16 in the opening frame. San Jose returned home following a six-game trek and has earned just one regulation win in 13 contests this season. The Sharks were without Alexander Wennberg and Igor Chernyshov, both week to week with upper-body injuries. Rookie Ivar Stenberg began on the top line alongside Celebrini and Graf.
