We have a first look at what the Philadelphia Flyers‘ new home will look like.
On Tuesday, the Flyers, as well as the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, shared the first renderings of a proposed new arena that is scheduled to open in 2030. It will be home to the Flyers, 76ers, and the city’s future WNBA franchise, which will debut around the time the team takes to the court for the first time.
The arena site has historical significance. The venue will be in South Philadelphia, on the grounds of the old Spectrum, where the Flyers called home for the first 20 seasons. There, the Flyers won their only two Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975, and also made the finals in 1985 and 1987.
Brian Roberts, chairman of Comcast Corporation, the governing body of the Flyers, stated that the announcement marks a new era for sports in the City of Brotherly Love.
“To build our future where Ed Snider and the Spectrum made history makes this project truly special. Working with HBSE, we are creating a world-class experience worthy of Philadelphia’s incredible fans,” Roberts said in a release. “None of this would be possible without great partners, and I’m deeply grateful to Dan Hilferty, Josh Harris, David Adelman, David Blitzer, and all the teams who worked so hard to get us here — we can’t wait to bring championships to this new home. I would also like to thank Mayor Parker and Council President Kenyatta Johnson for their leadership as we work to bring this transformative project to life for Philadelphia and its fans.”
Along with a new arena, which is going to have a resemblance to the old Spectrum, there will be fan plazas surrounding the building, giving fans a greater experience than just going to a game. The unnamed venue is going to be the first fully privately funded project in Philadelphia history, and will create nearly 15,000 jobs, along with nearly $6 billion in economic activity over a 10-year span.
The Flyers have been playing at their current home, Xfinity Mobile Arena, since 1996. The team hasn’t nearly had the same success at the newer barn compared to the Spectrum, only reaching the Cup Final twice, doing so in 1997 and 2010.
