A decorated NHL alum has passed away.
On Wednesday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that four-time Stanley Cup champion Andre Pronovost died on Sept. 8 at the age of 90.
At 90, he was the sixth-oldest living former Canadien.
The Shawinigan Falls, Que. native spent 10 years in the NHL, enjoying several years of success with the Habs. After breaking into the league during the 1956-57 campaign, and helpd the team win its second straight Stanley Cup. He was part of the team’s next three championship runs, as Montreal was in the midst of its dynasty in the last ’50s, which saw the Original Six franchise win a record five consecutive Cups.
In the middle of the 1960-61 season, Pronovost was on the move, as he joined the rival Boston Bruins. After spending parts of three seasons in Beantown, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings during the 1962-63 campaign. On a strong team in Detroit, Pronovost got lost in the shuffle, seeing more time in the minors than in the NHL. His last bit of experience in the big time came with the expansion Minnesota North Stars, appearing in eight regular-season games and another eight in the playoffs during the 1967-68 season.
Pronovost bounced around the minors over the next three years, including posting an impressive 107 points with the International Hockey League’s Muskegon Mohawks during the 1969-70 season. He last played with the Jersey Devils of the Senior EHL in 1971-72 before officially hanging up his skates.
In 556 regular-season games in the NHL, Pronovost scored 94 goals and 104 assists for 198 points, with another 22 points in 70 postseason contests.
Pronovost is the younger brother of Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Famer Marcel Pronovost. Andre is also the grandfather of current NHLer Anthony Mantha.
