The New York Islanders are keeping around a former undrafted free agent for at least a couple more seasons.
On Wednesday, the Islanders announced that they have signed forward Joey Larson to a two-year, two-way contract extension.
Larson, 25, entered this offseason as a restricted free agent. The financial details of this deal have not yet been disclosed.
The Brighton, Michigan native played all of last season with New York’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Bridgeport Islanders, where he put up 17 goals and 11 assists for 28 points in 63 games.
Larson joined the Islanders’ organization when he signed a one-year, entry-level deal as an undrafted free agent in April of 2025. He made his professional debut at the tail end of the 2024-25 season, notching two goals and an assist for three points in six games with Bridgeport.
Prior to turning pro, Larson had a three-year career split between Northern Michigan University and Michigan State University. His first collegiate season of 2022-23 was spent with Northern Michigan, where he registered 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 36 games. He transferred to Michigan State for the 2023-24 season, and had his best college season with 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points in 38 games. His final college season of 2024-25 saw him score 10 goals and add 14 assists for 24 points in 37 games.
Larson jumped to college from the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he impressed with 32 goals and 34 assists for 66 points in 61 games played. He then contributed four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in nine postseason games.
At 6’1″ and 196 pounds, Larson is a right-shot winger with the physical tools to play in the NHL. The Islanders are hoping he can continue to develop as a potentional late bloomer within their organization.
