The Winnipeg Jets have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with unrestricted free agent defenseman Henry Thrun, the club announced Thursday afternoon.

Thrun, 25, spent the 2025-26 season in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. The 6’2″ left-shot defender skated in just four games with the Maple Leafs in 2025-26, recording no points; he spent most of the year with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, collecting 23 points in 55 games during the regular season before appearing in 24 playoff contests during the club’s successful bid for the Calder Cup.

According to the Jets, Thrun’s new contract is a two-way deal that carries an $850,000 NHL cap hit, representing a slight decrease from his previous $1 million NHL salary. The Maple Leafs opted not to tender Thrun a qualifying offer as a pending restricted free agent, allowing him to hit the open market.

A fourth-round pick (No. 101 overall) of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2019 NHL Draft, Thrun went from the U.S. National Team Development Program to Harvard University immediately after being drafted.

The Southborough, Mass. product spent three seasons at Harvard, collecting 17 goals and 84 points in 99 games and serving as team captain in his final year. He also played for Team USA at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship, recording one assist and four penalty minutes in seven games and winning a silver medal.

Near the tail end of the 2022-23 season, the Ducks traded Thrun’s rights to the San Jose Sharks. He signed his entry-level contract with the Sharks shortly thereafter and appeared in his first eight games with the club that spring. He ultimately skated in 119 games with the Sharks over parts of three seasons before being traded to Toronto in the 2025 offseason in exchange for veteran winger Ryan Reaves.

Across 123 NHL games split between the Sharks and Maple Leafs, Thrun has collected five goals, 25 points, and 46 penalty minutes. He will now compete with the likes of Garrett Brown, Isaak Phillips, Alfons Freij, and Jack St. Ivany for playing time with the Jets, or, alternatively, the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.
