The opening day of the 2026-27 NHL season is in the books, and we’ve already seen some terrific goals. Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander had a couple dandies, and Patrick Kane scored on a breakaway in his first game back with the Chicago Blackhawks. The highlight of the night, however, has to go the new Boston Bruins forward JJ Peterka, who undressed New York Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider and went five-hole on goaltender Igor Shesterkin late in a 3-0 Bruins win.

The Bruins acquired Peterka from the Utah Mammoth over the offseason to give their offense a boost, and at least through one game, they have to be happy with their return. Playing on Boston’s top line along with Elias Lindholm and David Pastrnak, Peterka could be in for a career season.

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discussed Peterka’s impressive debut with the Bruins.

Carter Hutton: JJ Peterka for me is a guy that’s going to be under the microscope in Boston. He’s brought in to be a big piece. It didn’t go well in Utah for him, and Buffalo obviously moved on from him. He’s back in the Atlantic Division. This is a huge goal. What a play. A sneaky little release to the five hole. We waited all game for this. Kind of what I expected, though, from Shesterkin, from (Jeremy) Swayman to be solid. The Bruins might be something to mess with this year. They looked very good yesterday.

Tyler Yaremchuk: We talked about it on one of our summer shows, but I really do think that they’re getting overlooked a liitle bit in the grand scheme of things. They didn’t lose a lot over the summer. They go and pick up a guy like JJ Peterka, who I think playing on that team will go back to being a centerpiece of the offense instead of getting lost in the shuffle like he did a bit in Utah. I think he can go back and be a 30 to 35-plus goal guy if things go his way. Good to see Peterka get off on the right foot. The Bruins are 1-0.
