A couple of minor leaguers have signed new contracts to stay out west.
On Monday, the Seattle Kraken signed forwards Jon-Randall Avon and Lleyton Roed to one-year, two-way contract extensions. Both players’ NHL cap hits for the 2026-27 season will be $850,000. While Roed’s minor-league salary has yet to be reported, PuckPedia states that Avon has an American Hockey League cap hit of $100,000.
Both players, coming off their entry-level contracts, have spent their entire professional careers in the AHL, having yet to scratch their names into the lineup.
Avon’s three-year deal, which he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers in September 2021, had an NHL AAV of $800,000, with a minor-league salary of $80,000. He played the first two years of his career with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers’ top farm team, but was traded to the Kraken organization in a minor-league swap with forward Tucker Robertson in September of last year.
The Peterborough, Ont. native ended up having a career year with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, the Kraken’s primary affiliate, scoring 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points in 45 games. He added another seven goals and eight points in Calder Cup Playoffs, as the Firebirds made it back to the Pacific Division Final, ultimately losing to the Colorado Eagles.
In 170 regular-season games in the AHL, the undrafted forward has potted 26 goals and 33 assists for 59 points, with another eight points in 15 postseason contests.
Roed, another undrafted player, joined the Firebirds late in the 2023-24 season after his sophomore season at Bemidji State. He’s been a solid secondary scorer with the team over the past two years, posting 26 points in 2024-25, before notching 11 goals and 27 assists for 38 points in 65 games this past season. He scored three goals and seven points in Coachella Valley’s playoff run.
In 126 AHL regular-season appearances, Roed has posted 25 goals and 41 assists for 66 points, with another eight points in 17 playoff games.
