Last Night's Film Room – Oct 16
Got back from the press box late and pulled the box scores this morning. Three games finished overnight. Here's what caught my eye.
Tulane 31, Memphis 17
Memphis falls to 5-2 and the numbers explain it plainly. Marcus Stokes (Memphis) went 20/37, 306 yards, 2 touchdowns, but 3 interceptions and a QBR of 10.9. That's a tough number to win with. What keeps me watching Memphis is the young skill underneath him. Stonka Burnside (Memphis) had 7 catches for 151 yards, 21.6 average, long of 76. Jaylin Carter (Memphis) carried 23 times for 135 yards at 5.9 per. Both sophomores. When those two are rolling and the ball isn't turning over, Memphis looks like a different team.
Washington 38, Purdue 26
Washington goes to 4-3 and I'm keeping tabs on their young receivers. Chris Lawson (Washington) went for 6 catches, 103 yards, 17.2 average. Dezmen Roebuck (Washington) added 5 for 97 yards and a score, 19.4 average. Two sophomores quietly building something. Elijah Brown (Washington) had 3 picks himself, so the defense had to bail him out. Jeron Jones (Washington, freshman CB) and Rylon Dillard-Allen (Washington, sophomore S) each had an interception. That's your story.
App State 35, Coastal Carolina 32
This one I want to flag. Deuce Bailey (Coastal Carolina) is a freshman quarterback who went 16/31, 298 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception, QBR of 81.1 in a loss. Coastal is 2-5 but that kid put up a real line. Dominic Lee-Knicely (Coastal Carolina) ran 18 times for 90 yards at 5.0 per. Henry Hasselbeck (App State) ran 21 times for 125 yards at 6.0 to help seal it.
Anybody else watching Deuce Bailey develop the rest of this season?
