As first reported by TSN/The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the Tampa Bay Lightning have signed John Carlson to a two-year contract worth $8.5 million per season.
Carlson, a 36-year-old right-shot defender, was the No. 2-ranked player on Matt Larkin’s UFA board.
Carlson has spent most of his career with the Washington Capitals. The team selected him in the first round of the 2008 NHL Draft, and he remained there until just before the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, when he was moved to the Anaheim Ducks for a first-round pick.
The American defender had 46 points in 55 games with Washington before adding another 14 down the stretch with the Ducks. Carlson finished with six points in 12 playoff games to cap off the season.
Carlson is 14th in playoff games played with 149 among all active NHL players. Interestingly enough, his teams have advanced beyond the second round just once, back when the Caps won the 2018 Stanley Cup.
Carlson, who had his rights traded to Carolina during the 2026 NHL Draft, has amassed 170 goals, 785 points and 396 penalty minutes in 1,159 games over 17 NHL seasons. He was also a Norris Trophy finalist in 2020 after leading all defensemen with 60 assists and 75 points.
Outside of the NHL, Carlson won two Calder Cup championships with the Hershey Bears, and helped USA win gold at the 2010 World Junior Championship after scoring the game-winning goal in the final.
According to PuckPedia, the Lightning have just over $2.3 million in cap space with 13 forwards, eight defenders and three goaltenders under contract. Goaltender Jonas Johansson ($1.25 million) is expected to move on after the Dennis Hildeby trade earlier in the day. The team doesn’t have any RFAs to sign, so the team we see today could be close to the one we see on opening night in October.
