The Utah Mammoth have Sebastian Cossa locked up, as they signed their newly-acquired goaltender to a two-year contract with a $2 million cap hit.
Cossa was a restricted free agent after the conclusion of his three-year, entry-level contract with an $863,334 cap hit. With just one NHL game under his belt, coming in the 2024-25 season, the $2 million cap hit comes at a slight surprise, but being one of the top goaltending prospects in the league clearly had an impact on his new contract.
Cossa’s contract has a clean $2 million salary for both seasons with no signing bonuses, and with the contract only taking up RFA years, there are no clauses with the contract. His contract comparables are Yaroslav Askarov and Carter Hart.
With the new contract, it’s clear that the Mammoth plan on deploying Cossa on their NHL roster in tandem with Karel Vejmelka. Vejmelka has started at least 50 games in four of his five NHL seasons, and played 58 and 64 games in the last two seasons, so even if the Mammoth want to integrate Cossa into the NHL and not deploy their goalies as a 1A/1B tandem, Cossa will certainly help lighten Vejmelka’s load.
The Mammoth acquired Cossa from the Detroit Red Wings at the 2026 NHL Draft in exchange for their 23rd overall pick, which the Red Wings used to select J.P. Hurlbert. Cossa is coming off his best season in the AHL where he had a 26-8-4 record, a .915 save percentage and five shutouts. However, he lost the starting gig for the playoffs to Michal Postava, and as a result, there were some rumours that the Red Wings were looking to move him, especially with Trey Augustine also in their system.
The Mammoth have made a few moves already this offseason, as along with trading for and signing Cossa, they re-signed Kailer Yamamoto and traded J.J. Peterka. Utah now has about $17,500,477 in projected salary cap space (according to PuckPedia) with 11 unrestricted free agents and one restricted free agent left to re-sign, highlighted by Barrett Hayton, Alex Kerfoot, Kevin Stenlund and Ian Cole.
