New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor will receive the Roberto Clemente Award before Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night, Major League Baseball announced.
The honor recognizes players for character, philanthropy, community involvement and positive contributions on and off the field. Lindor, a five-time All-Star, becomes the fifth winner of Puerto Rican descent, joining Edgar Martinez (2004), Carlos Delgado (2006), Carlos Beltrán (2013) and Yadier Molina (2018).
Lindor and his wife Katia have supported numerous causes, including Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the SEEN Foundation for disability advocacy, Special Olympics Florida and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He donated to Puerto Rico relief efforts after Hurricanes Maria and Fiona, restored athletic facilities in his hometown of Caguas, Puerto Rico, and contributed more than $1 million to build Lindor Hall at his alma mater, Montverde Academy in Florida.
Additional initiatives include a leadership development program for sports medicine students at Bayside High School in New York and funding backpacks and school supplies in Queens, where Citi Field is located.
The award is named for Roberto Clemente, the 15-time All-Star from Puerto Rico who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while delivering supplies to Nicaragua earthquake victims.
