Sacramento Kings forward/guard Ben Simmons has suffered a torn right Achilles tendon and will undergo surgery, the team announced Sunday evening. The injury occurred during practice, and while no official recovery timetable was disclosed, he is expected to miss the entire 2026/27 season.
Simmons, 30, had returned to the NBA this fall after sitting out since the end of the 2024/25 season while recovering from multiple back surgeries. In two preseason appearances with Sacramento, he showed renewed aggression, averaging 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 17.4 minutes per game.
The former No. 1 overall pick and three-time All-Star had been slated to start on opening night alongside Darius Acuff Jr., Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis. The Kings may turn to Precious Achiuwa, who started four of five preseason contests.
Simmons becomes the third player this month to suffer a torn Achilles, joining Oklahoma City's Otega Oweh and Philadelphia's Ariel Hukporti.
Mickey's Angle: Kings depth takes a hit before the season even tips, and anyone holding out hope for a Simmons revival needs to look elsewhere for now.
