New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has been playing with two broken bones in his left hand since suffering the injury on October 5 against the Atlanta Falcons, according to sources.
The Saints have not publicly confirmed the diagnosis. Shough has taped together the ring and pinky fingers on his non-throwing hand and worn a protective glove over a heavily bandaged hand. He spent last week's game against the Minnesota Vikings handing off with his opposite hand.
The injury is expected to take weeks to heal, with one source estimating "a couple of months." Despite this, Shough has not missed any playing time and has been a full participant in practice.
Shough struggled against Minnesota's second-ranked defense, passing for a career-low 96 yards with two interceptions in the 23-13 loss. The defeat dropped the Saints to 1-4 and prompted team owner Gayle Benson to publicly criticize the team, calling the start "not acceptable."
Shough said he shared Benson's frustration but believes the Saints "are going to have a really good chance to go on a run here."
New Orleans faces the New York Giants on Sunday before playing the Pittsburgh Steelers in Paris next week, followed by the bye week.
Mickey's Angle: The bye week timing couldn't be better for Shough to heal, but fantasy managers should note the hand issue and tough defenses ahead before counting on a quick turnaround.
