Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood saved the Wolverines' bacon with a Hail Mary mulligan. Underwood eventually may not be able to save his starting job.

He’s our QB right now,” Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham told reporters on Monday, via Nick Kosko of On3.com. “And it’s not something that’s infinite. At some point, we’ve got to turn a corner and we’ve got to see improvement, as we do with a lot of stuff; you’ve got to see improvement out of the coaches, so it’s not just on Bryce. And it’s not just Bryce’s job that is not absolutely set in concrete. You’ve got to perform week in and week out and become somebody that is playing at a level we can win with.”

The program has made a significant financial commitment to Underwood, at $3 million per year. It's one of the realities of paying players; you need to pay the right ones.

Again, Underwood still has the job. Saturday night's performance against a MAC school was troubling, even with the late-game heroics. Underwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He added 47 yards rushing and a touchdown, on nine attempts.

He'll need to perform at a higher level against better competition.

The next test happens on Saturday, when Oklahoma comes to town.
