The Bears say their "sole focus" when it comes to a new stadium is on Hammond, Indiana. If they make the move, they won't be the Hammond Bears or the Indiana Bears or anything other than the Chicago Bears.
As if there was any doubt that one of the NFL's iconic teams would keep its iconic name, Bears chairman George McCaskey told reporters on Thursday that they will continue to be the "Chicago Bears" if they cross the border.
Of course they will. The Jets and Giants kept "New York" when they moved to New Jersey. Dropping the "Chicago" would be even more of a middle finger to the fans whom they hope will follow them into Indiana for their home games.
It won't matter unless and until the Bears actually move to Indiana. It still seems to be a bluff. But if the powers-that-be in Illinois continue to call that bluff, the Bears may eventually have no option to pack up their stuff and move.
