A member of the Iowa marching band was removed from life support on Monday, two days after collapsing shortly before halftime of a game against Northern Illinois.

Via the Daily Iowan, Derek Phillips suffered cardiac arrest in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees.

It was determined that Phillips had suffered severe brain damage. His family decided on Monday to remove him from life support.

“Derek is comfortable, surrounded by family, and enveloped in the music he loved so much,” his family said in a social-media post. “Thank you for every prayer, every shared experience, and every bit of love you’ve given to our boy.”

It's an incredibly tragic outcome, one that should prompt all universities to revisit policies applicable to the performance and attire of members of the marching band on oppressively hot days.
