Sidney Crosby has set another NHL record.

The future Hockey Hall of Famer is entering his 20th season as the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and is now the longest-tenured captain in NHL history.

Crosby’s 22nd NHL season gets underway on Wednesday night as the Penguins travel in-state to take on the Philadelphia Flyers.

The previous record holder was Steve Yzerman, who wore the “C” with the Detroit Red Wings between 1986-87 and 2005-06 (the 2024-25 NHL lockout does not count towards the total).

The second-longest active streak is Alex Ovechkin with the Washington Capitals (2010-11 to present day).

Crosby is coming off a 2025-26 campaign that saw him score 29 goals and add 45 assists for 74 points in 68 games.

Across 21 NHL seasons, Crosby has 654 goals and 1,107 assists for 1,761 points in 1,420 career regular-season games. He has hit the 100-point mark in six seasons and recorded at least 50 assists in a season 12 times.

During that time, he’s broken the 100-point mark six times, recorded at least 50 assists 12 times, hit the 30-goal mark 13 times and has averaged more than a point-per-game in every season of his career.

In 2025-26, he passed Mario Lemieux for eighth on the NHL’s all-time points list, as well as becoming the all-time points leader in Penguins franchise history.

Crosby also has 72 goals and 134 assists for 206 points in 186 career playoff games. He captained the Penguins to three Stanley Cup championships in 2009, 2016 and 2017, and helped them reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2008. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy in both 2016 and 2017.

Crosby has twice won each of the Hart Trophy, the Art Ross Trophy, the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award.
