The Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Friday morning that they have signed forward Tommy Novak to a three-year contract extension that will kick in at the start of the 2027-28 season.

The deal will pay Novak a total of $13.95 over its span, resulting in a salary cap hit of $4.65 million through 2029-30.

Novak just completed his first full season with the Penguins after coming over in a trade with the Nashville Predators during the 2024-25 campaign. As Pittsburgh surprised the league by finishing second in the Metropolitan Division and making the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Novak provided valuable depth production, appearing in all 82 regular season games and tallying 42 points on 16 goals and 26 assists.

It marked the third season of Novak’s career in which he eclipsed the 40-point mark, joining both 2022-23 and 2023-24, both of which came with the Predators.

After he was acquired in a trade that sent Michael Bunting and a fourth-round pick to Nashville, Novak appeared in just two games at the end of the 2024-25 season with the Pens.

The 29-year-old St. Paul native produced the first points of his postseason career this year, as he recorded two assists in six games as Pittsburgh fell in the first round to its in-state rival Philadelphia Flyers.

In head coach Dan Muse’s lineup, Novak provides middle-six versatility down the middle, as he can center the second line with Evgeni Malkin on his wing or drop down to provide quality offensive punch to the third line. With the salary cap increasing, his new cap hit makes him a solid bargain for both roles.

Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas has had a busy summer as he looks to keep the team in position to make the postseason once again.

Dubas’ offseason acquisitions include Andrei Kuzmenko, Nick Robertson, Hendrix Lapierre, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Declan Carlile and Kaedan Korczak.
