Texas Rangers top prospect Sebastian Walcott is receiving extra at-bats in the Arizona Fall League while the organization expands his defensive repertoire.
The 20-year-old, who previously played only shortstop and third base in the minors, is now working out in the outfield. Josh Bonifay, the club's director of player development, has been running Walcott through outfield drills before games. Walcott has not yet appeared in an AFL game in the outfield, though the club hopes to secure him reps there.
"I feel confident going into the outfield," Walcott told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Walcott missed much of the season after an elbow injury required an internal brace procedure. He did not play until mid-July and was unable to compete for a big-league roster spot. He finished the year with a .322/.398/.586 slash line, nine home runs and 11 stolen bases in 37 games at Double-A, plus two games at Triple-A. He is likely to open next season at Triple-A.
The positional experiment comes with Walcott blocked at shortstop by Corey Seager and Josh Jung entrenched at third base. A designated hitter vacancy could also emerge with Joc Pederson heading to free agency.
