The situation in Hockeytown continues to get worse by the day.
As contract talks have seemed to have stalled between player and team, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson has returned to his native Sweden and was seen practicing with his former team, Frolunda HC, on Wednesday.
It’s not a good sign for a Red Wings team that is just one day away from opening the 2026-27 season. Edvinsson, a restricted free agent, has yet to sign a new deal with the organization that took him sixth overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. Earlier this month, it was reported that the 6-foot-6 rearguard was waiting for Detroit to sort out its general manager situation before continuing negotiations on his next contract.
Edvinsson attended training camp despite not having a new deal signed. However, as camp came to a close, the 23-year-old still had no contract and stepped away from the team as practice ramped up ahead of the regular season.
Last season marked the final year of Edvinsson’s three-year, entry-level contract, which carried an AAV of $1,744,167.
A roadblock to Edvinsson’s next contract emerged after Steve Yzerman stepped down as GM in July, leaving assistant GM Shawn Horcoff in charge of day-to-day operations. Detroit still has yet to find a full-time replacement, though the Original Six franchise finally gave Horcoff the interim tag before training camp got underway.
With Horcoff having a more official title, many expected that a deal between Edvinsson and the Red Wings would finally come to fruition. Yet, as the Wings prepare for their season opener on Friday against the New York Rangers, they remain without one of their top blueliners. The team is attempting to fill a gap in the lineup, claiming defender Andreas Englund off waivers from the Calgary Flames last week.
Edvisson is part of a young contingent on Detroit’s growing blue line. Alongside names such as Moritz Seider, Albert Johnasson and Axel Sandin-Pellikka, the Wings have a solid young core of defenders that can carry the team into the future. In his rookie season, Edvinsson posted a career-high 31 points in 78 games. His production dipped last year, notching nine goals and 25 points in 72 affairs, though he finished with a plus/minus of +12 while averaging 22:21 of ice time.
In 175 NHL contests, the 23-year-old has scored 19 goals and 41 assists for 60 points.
