It appears the Boston Bruins are making a move to give their offense a boost.
On Friday, Emily Kaplan reported that the Bruins and the Utah Mammoth have agreed on a trade to send forward JJ Peterka to Boston in exchange for mulitiple first-round picks.
Peterka, 24, had a decent showing with the Mammoth last season, registering 25 goals and 22 assists for 47 points in all 82 regular season games. He then disappointed in the playoffs, however, going scoreless in Utah’s six-game first-round loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Bruins’ interest in Peterka is understandable. Boston overachieved offensively last season, as their 3.27 goals per game put them in a tie for 10th in the NHL. Their scoring fell off in the postseason, however, as they managed just 12 goals in their six-game first-round loss to the Buffalo Sabres, putting up just one goal in Games 3, 4, and 6 of the series. Peterka, even if his stock his somewhat low after his poor end to last season, can still provide some juice to the Bruins’ forward lines.
Initially a second-round pick (34th overall) by the Sabres in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Peterka became a full-time NHLer in the 2022-23 season, notching 12 goals and 20 assists for 32 points in 77 games. He improved his production the following year, tallying 28 goals and 22 asssists for 50 points over 82 games in the 2023-24 season. His career-best campaign came in the 2024-25 season, when he scored 27 goals and added 41 assists for 68 points in 77 games.
In June of 2025, Buffalo traded Peterka to Utah for winger Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesselring.
The German national also represented his country at 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, where he had a goal and three assists for four points in five games as Germany finished sixth in the tournament.
