Well, it looks like he’ll stay in the nation’s capital after all.
According to multiple reports, unrestricted free agent Claude Giroux is expected to re-sign with the Ottawa Senators.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the news. The terms of the contract have yet to be reported. Giroux spent the 2025-26 season on a one-year contract with a cap hit of $2 million and an AAV of $4.75 million, driven by several potential performance bonuses.
There were reports last week that Giroux might be returning to the Philadelphia Flyers, the team with which he spent the first 14 years of his NHL career. However, something must’ve changed in the veteran’s plans, as he elected to stay with the Sens, the team he has been with since the summer of 2022.
The 38-year-old was one of the top unrestricted free agents left following the first few days of NHL free agency. While he’s well past his prime, Giroux has been an important piece in Ottawa’s resurgence in recent years. He’s provided veteran leadership to a young team that aspires to be one of the better teams in the Atlantic Division for years to come.
This past season, Giroux scored 14 goals and 35 assists for 49 points in 82 games. It marked the first time since the 2009-10 campaign that he failed to reach the 50-point mark in a full 82-game season. Yet, it was enough to help the Sens reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second year in a row, something the franchise hadn’t done since 2013. He failed to post a point in the team’s opening-round series, which saw Ottawa get swept by the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Carolina Hurricanes.
In 1,345 regular-season games in the NHL, the Hearst, Ont. native has potted 379 goals and 786 assists for 1,165 points, with another 86 points in 105 playoff contests.
