The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Bowen Byram from the Buffalo Sabres Tuesday in a trade that includes the No. 4 overall pick in Friday’s NHL Entry Draft.
According to hockey insider Frank Seravalli, the deal isn’t yet done, but the trade will include another draft pick and a player going to Buffalo in exchange for Byram.
Last season, Byram scored 11 goals and added 31 assists for 42 points in 82 regular-season games with the Sabres. He also scored four goals and added three assists for seven points in 13 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
In 328 career regular-season games, Byram has 44 goals and 108 assists for 152 points with the Sabres and Colorado Avalanche.
Byram’s name came up in trade rumors last week after TSN’s Darren Dreger reported multiple teams checked in with Sabres’ GM Jarmo Kekalainen.
According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Byram trade has no effect on Buffalo’s attempts to re-sign forward Alex Tuch, who will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
“I’m told Tuch is ‘very likely’ heading to free agency July 1,” Pagnotta said.
Byram, 25, was acquired by the Sabres in a trade with the Avalanche at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline in exchange for forward Casey Mittelstadt. Last summer, he signed a two-year, $12.5-million extension that would pay him an annual average value of $6.25 million through the 2026-27 season.
In four WHL seasons with the Vancouver Giants, Byram scored 46 goals and added 104 assists for 150 points in 188 career regular-season games.
