The San Jose Sharks are bringing in a proven AHL scorer to help with their forward depth.
According to Sheng Peng, the Sharks signed center Alex Barre-Boule as an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on Wednesday to a two-year deal with an $875,000 AAV.
Barre-Boulet, 29, has established himself as one of the very best point producers in the American Hockey League (AHL). Last season with the Colorado Eagles, the AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, he put up 26 goals and 44 assists for 70 points in 70 games, which put him second in the AHL in scoring. He has the fifth most AHL points over the past 10 seasons among active players.
The Montmagny, Quebec native played his junior hockey in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), splitting his time between the Drummondville Voltigeurs and the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. He was a good scorer through his first three junior season, but in his fourth and final junior season with Blainville-Boisbriand, he exploded with 53 goals and 63 assists for 116 points over 65 games.
Barre-Boulet began his professional career by signing with the Tampa Bay Lightning as an undrafted free agent ahead of the 2018-19 season. That year, he showed his scoring prowess in junior could translate to the AHL, as he notched 34 goals and 34 assists for 68 points in 74 games for the Syracuse Crunch.
He would remain in the Lightning’s organization for the first six years of his professional career, with the exception of two games he played for the Seattle Kraken in October of 2021 as a result of getting claimed off waivers, dropped, and re-claimed by Tampa Bay. Over that time, he played in 68 total NHL games, compiling 12 goals and six assists for 18 points.
Following the 2023-24 season, Barre-Boulet left the Lightning to join the Montreal Canadiens for the 2024-25 season, and then Colorado for the 2025-26 season.
Later in the day, the Sharks signed Tye Felhaber to a one-year deal worth $850,000 to give the team some AHL depth. The 27-year-old had 15 goals and 31 points in 63 games with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles last year. He made his NHL debut with the Colorado Avalanche two years ago, but failed to register a point through five games.
