The San Jose Sharks announced that they’ve signed defenseman Jacob Trouba to a four-year contract with an $8.25 million cap hit.

Trouba was an unrestricted free agent after the conclusion of his seven-year contract with an $8 million cap hit. He was ranked sixth on Matt Larkin’s free agent board.

At this point in time, the contract breakdown of Trouba’s contract has yet to be confirmed, including the salary structure and if the deal comes with any bonuses or clauses. The deal locks him up to 7.93% of the salary cap until 2029-30 when he’ll be 36. His closest contract comparable is Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman (four years with an $8 million cap hit).

With Trouba, the Sharks get a veteran defenseman who will eat big minutes for them as they look to continue to build towards a playoff push with their current core of young players. He joins Dmitry Orlov as the two veterans on an otherwise relatively young blueline, highlighted by 2024 11th-overall pick Sam Dickinson and recent acquisition Michael Kesselring.

Trouba is coming off of one of his more productive seasons, as he had 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points in 81 games with the Anaheim Ducks. It’s just the third time in his career he’s hit the 35-point mark and the third time he’s hit double digits in goals. He also had one goal in 12 games in the playoffs.

The Sharks have had a busy free agency period thus far, as they’ve also signed Mason Marchment. They have $31,165,888 in salary cap space right now according to PuckPedia (not including the Marchment signing, which remains unconfirmed) to use with four restricted free agents and 15 UFAs to re-sign, highlighted by Collin Graf and Shakir Mukhamadullin.
