Things are not looking up for Matt Duchene as the start of the regular season approaches.

The Dallas Stars center is now doubtful to play in the regular season opener after experiencing a setback with an upper-body injury.

Duchene has been dealing with the injury throughout training camp, and it has limited his ice time over the course of the preseason. It had been healing, and Duchene was originally trending closer to playing in the season opener, but he experienced a setback recently. As a result, his status for Friday’s game against the St. Louis Blues does not appear to be optimistic.

It’s unclear what the cause of Duchene’s injury was, or when he sustained it, as it was an issue right from the start of training camp. He had missed the first couple days of training camp due to maintenance before it was revealed to be an injury, so it wasn’t sustained during the preseason. He also wasn’t dealing with any injuries at the end of last season, so this isn’t the case of something still lingering from last season as well.

As a result of the injury, Duchene did not play any preseason games.

Duchene is currently projected to skate on the Stars’ third line alongside Sam Steel and Jamie Benn, as well as on the top power-play unit. Dallas has no extra forwards on the roster at this point in time, so they will either need to recall one from the Texas Stars, or roll with an 11 forward, seven defensemen lineup and play Kyle Capobianco.

Despite missing 25 games due to injuries, Duchene is coming off another excellent season where he had 16 goals and 29 assists for 45 points in 57 games, a 64-point pace over the course of a full 82-game season. He then stepped up his performance even more come playoff time despite the Stars’ early exit, as he had two goals and seven assists for nine points in six games.

The Stars will look to kick off their season on the right foot, possibly without Duchene, when they host the Blues on Friday at 8 p.m. CT.
