The Dallas Stars are keeping goaltender Casey DeSmith around for the future, signing the 35-year-old to a two-year contract extension that will keep him until he is 38, as he enters the final year of his deal.

DeSmith put pen to paper on the fresh deal Wednesday, committing to the $5 million contract through the 2028-29 season, with an average annual value of $2.5 million, starting with the 2027-28 season.

De Smith is in the final year of a three-year deal with the Stars, which will total $3.05 million by the end of the 2026-27 campaign, with an average annual value of $1,016,667.

“Extending Casey has been a priority for us, and we’re excited to have him locked up for two more years,” said Stars general manager Jim Nill. “He’s been incredibly reliable during his time with our organization, and we are looking forward to the tandem of Casey and Jake continuing to anchor our team moving forward.”

With the Stars, DeSmith has a .911 save percentage and three shutouts in 53 games over the last two years, largely serving as Jake Oettinger’s backup. Since joining as a free agent in the summer of 2024, he’s helped the Texas club secure 29 wins.

In total, the Rochester, New York native’s NHL career includes a .910 save percentage and 99 wins in 220 regular-season games across his time with the Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks, and at least 10 wins in seven of his eight NHL seasons, including last season’s 15-win campaign with the Stars.

While the NHL season dropped the puck on Tuesday night, the Stars won’t get things started until Friday against the St. Louis Blues on home ice, kicking off a busy four-day season-opening spell, which includes a trip to face the Nashville Predators on Saturday, before returning home against the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 5.
