The Colorado Avalanche have locked down their bench boss for the foreseeable future.

Prior to the team’s season opener on Tuesday, the Avalanche announced that they have signed head coach Jared Bednar to a four-year contract extension, keeping him on the books through the 2030-31 season.

The move keeps one of the longest-tenured coaches in the NHL today in the Mile High City for a long time. Bednar has only kept Colorado near the top of the league’s upper echelon for the better part of a decade, leading the team to a Stanley Cup in 2022, along with a pair of Presidents’ Trophies.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discuss why Bednar is the right guy to be on the Avs’ bench for years to come.

Tyler Yaremchuk: He’s entering his 11th season as the head coach of the Avs. They’ve made the playoffs every single year but one since he’s been at the helm. He is the winningest coach in franchise history. He has the sixth-best winning percentage of all time in the playoffs amongst head coaches who coached at least 50 games in the postseason. Like all of the numbers, the accolades, it’s been a wildly successful run for Jared Bednar.

It actually is pretty crazy when you look back on the timeline of him. … Bednar steps into a not-so-great situation, and obviously has made the most of it. If he rolls out and makes it through this entire contract extension, he’s going to be the bench boss there for 15 seasons, which is pretty crazy, but a deserved extension for Jared Bednar. … It’s like if things weren’t going to go well in Colorado, that’s the coach who you kind of saw is like, ‘Oh, one year left. Do they think they need a new voice?’ That’s obviously not the case with the extension dropping today.

Carter Hutton: I think the support too comes from within the players, right? Because we know how Nathan MacKinnon is. You know, he is a demanding guy, so he obviously has built that relationship with him. For Bednar, it’s kind of like one of those sneaky coaches that kind of came off the radar, took that job, and has run with it. So, that’s the other factor as a coach. Like, you get the right squad, you can really extend it into like a career. The factor is now, if he ever was to get fired, it would just be a pretty much wait a few months until someone else comes knocking for another job.
