After the blockbuster deal that saw the Ottawa Senators send captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers, many are wondering which member of the U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team will be on the move next.
In the past few months, both Tkachuk and Quinn Hughes have requested trades, which have been granted. Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin and Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck have also made requests, though those moves have yet to be made.
One name that has surfaced among the top American players in the game is Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski. The Norris Trophy winner is on a team in limbo, and could be a useful asset on a championship contender. Does that mean he’ll ask for a trade?
On Tuesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE. Jeff Marek of The Sheet joined Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton to discuss if Werenski is going to want out of Columbus.
Jeff Marek: Don Waddell needs to know. Teams need to know now, two years out…There’s no point in hanging on right to the bitter end. Columbus is a different situation, too, because they haven’t got over that hump, yet. They haven’t become that team that’s in the playoffs every year…how many times has that fan base been false-started? Then you get to a certain spot, and ‘Oh, we’re going to start this over again.’ At a certain point, you have to stop false-starting your fan base. That’s what makes this thing really sensitive if you’re Don Waddell.
You’re gonna need an answer, like, does it not almost feel like if you’re a general manager, you got to get all your players that are on that team and say, like, ‘Are you happy? Do you want to be here? Can we have, like, some confidence that you will sign an extension in a couple of seasons?’ Because you know the gold medal team all wants to go to three locations here.
