The Houston Astros will interview Mike Rizzo for their general manager vacancy on Monday, according to a report by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Rizzo, 65, served as the Nationals general manager from 2009 until he was fired last year. During his tenure, the club captured the 2019 World Series title. The Nationals replaced him with Paul Toboni, a 35-year-old who had been the Red Sox assistant GM.
The Astros have been without a general manager since Dana Brown was let go earlier this year. Brewers assistant GM Matt Kleine has already interviewed for the position.
Houston's candidate pool also includes Josh Barfield of the White Sox, Randy Flores of the Cardinals, Royals senior VP Scott Sharp, Braves assistant GM Ben Sestanovich, and Astros assistant GMs Charles Cook and Gavin Dickey. Rizzo is significantly older than the other candidates under consideration.
Industry perception holds that the Nationals fell behind in data and analytics in the latter portion of Rizzo's tenure. Rizzo also interviewed with the Athletics last month, though they hired 31-year-old Taylor Smith, formerly the Red Sox assistant GM, for that role.
