Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany collapsed following a training session on Friday and was hospitalized, the club announced.
German outlet BILD reported that an air ambulance touched down at the club's practice facility earlier that morning. The Bundesliga side confirmed in the afternoon that Kompany had been observing the reserve squad's workout when he fell ill. "Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's second team," the club said.
The 40-year-old will undergo thorough examination and remain under medical care. Coaching staff will handle training and match operations for the time being. Assistant Aaron Danks had already led Monday and Tuesday sessions before the Arsenal Champions League fixture.
Kompany missed those workouts after contracting a viral infection last week. Danks said the illness impacted Kompany's legs, causing discomfort. The manager also avoided post-match interviews after Bayern's 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig. Whether the infection contributed to Friday's incident remains unclear.
Bayern, undefeated and level atop the table with Borussia Dortmund, hosts Freiburg on Sunday. The club ranks 14th in Champions League standings.
