Lions coach Dan Campbell defended a bold fourth-down decision that ultimately helped his team defeat the Packers on a game-ending field goal.
With the score tied and 4:53 left in the fourth quarter, Campbell opted to go for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 24-yard line. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was stopped for a 2-yard loss, giving the Packers excellent field position.
"I thought we would get it, number one. I really believed we would get that," Campbell said.
The Lions blocked the Packers' subsequent field goal attempt and took possession with 3:21 remaining. The Lions then drove for the winning kick as time expired.
Campbell explained he wanted to ensure the Lions would regain possession with enough time to score. He feared a punt might allow the Packers to mount a clock-draining drive that would leave the Lions with no opportunity to respond. While his conversion prediction proved incorrect, his assessment about getting the ball back was validated.
