The Vancouver Canucks placed defenseman Jack Thompson on NHL waivers Sunday, the team announced.
Thompson, 24, has yet to appear in an NHL contest for Vancouver. The Courtice, Ontario native joined the organization in a trade that sent defenseman Jett Woo to the San Jose Sharks organization, a deal made under current general manager Ryan Johnson when he served as AHL GM.
The third-round pick, selected 93rd overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2020 NHL Draft, has produced 3 goals and 13 points in 14 games with the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks this season. He previously recorded 3 goals and 12 points in 42 games with the San Jose Barracuda. Across his AHL career, Thompson has accumulated 23 goals and 104 points in 217 games, along with 60 penalty minutes. He has also skated in 34 NHL contests with the Lightning and Sharks.
All 31 other NHL clubs may claim Thompson, though he is expected to clear waivers and rejoin Abbotsford. The farm club has opened 4-2-0, ranking sixth in the AHL Pacific Division, while the parent club carries a nine-game losing streak into Sunday's matchup against the Minnesota Wild.
