One person was killed and eight others were wounded in a mass shooting just outside Legion Field following the annual "Magic City Classic" football game Saturday night, according to Birmingham, Alabama police.
The shooting occurred along Graymont Avenue, where vendors were set up. Most spectators had already left the stadium property, said Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett, who added he was "very grateful that more people weren't injured."
The Magic City Classic is the annual matchup between Alabama A&M and Alabama State, billed as the largest historically Black college and university football game in the country. The rivalry has been played for more than 100 years, with nearly 70,000 fans attending Saturday's contest.
Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman said one person has been detained for questioning and multiple weapons were found and secured. Of the eight injured, one was in critical condition while the other seven were listed as stable.
Mickey's Angle: Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this tragedy. Community events like the Classic should be celebrations, and this violence has no place anywhere near them.
