Calgary Flames goaltender Devin Cooley has been named the NHL's second star of the week ending Oct. 25, following a stretch in which he posted a 1.50 goals-against average and a 0.955 save percentage across four consecutive starts.
Cooley, who is platooning with Dustin Wolf, arrived in Calgary as an unheralded free agent two years ago after serving as a backup for the San Jose Sharks. The undrafted netminder had posted a 0.909 save percentage last season and earned an invitation to the 2026 IIHF World Championship.
High-performance psychologist Dr. Michael Gervais, host of the "Finding Mastery" podcast, noted that Cooley operates in a flow state far longer than the roughly 20 percent typical for athletes. Former NHL goaltender Mike Condon, now a mental performance coach, said he shows clips of Cooley to younger goalies he trains.
Cooley developed under goalie coach Jason LaBarbera and first turned professional under coach Brad Ralph with the ECHL's Florida Everblades in 2020-21. Flames forward Ryan Strome said Cooley "exhausts all ideas and options" and brings joy to the team, while defenseman Joel Hanley described having deep philosophical dinner conversations with him. Cooley said he relies on his unconscious brain to do the work because it reacts more quickly.
