The Philadelphia Flyers, currently the NHL's least productive offense through nine contests, are facing increased scrutiny over roster decisions that have left two promising prospects in the minors.
Left wing Alex Bump, 22, was a healthy scratch after four games to start the season, with Michael Bunting taking his lineup spot. Bunting has since recorded zero points across five appearances while skating on the fourth line, accumulating four penalty minutes and six shots. Bump, meanwhile, has thrived since his reassignment to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, scoring in all four AHL contests and posting five goals, two assists and seven points.
Center Jett Luchanko, the 13th overall selection in the 2024 draft, also did not make the NHL roster out of camp. The 20-year-old has one goal and five assists in six Phantoms games, bringing his career AHL totals to 15 points across 21 regular-season and playoff appearances.
The organization learned from 2024 that rushing Phantoms promotions can damage playoff aspirations, having previously lost Bump and Denver Barkey to call-ups while battling injuries. Defenseman Oliver Bonk, 21, has already ascended to the Flyers' top pairing with no plans for return. Regarding Bump and Luchanko, one source assessed their NHL trajectory plainly: "it is now a matter of when, and not if."
